“The ache for home lives in all of us. The safe place where we can go as we are…” ― Maya Angelou
Avatar was founded to assist in the deinstitutionalization of individuals with developmental disabilities. Twenty-one of our original twenty-nine participants lived in institutions. Our commitment to them and all the people we support residentially is to assure that home is a place of comfort, security, serenity and freedom. If you’re interested in learning more about Avatar’s residential programs, please call Colleen Chopy at 401-826-7500 x26.
The homes we operate, located in northern and central Rhode Island, are personalized, attractive, and well-maintained. Services are individualized and provided by Avatar’s exceptional Direct Support Professionals.
Avatar began offering Shared Living Arrangements (SLA) in 2008. We were one of the first agencies in Rhode Island to provide this residential option. We are proud to be able to offer it as an alternative to group home living. The key to success is a strong relationship between residents and Shared Living Providers. We currently coordinate 27 SLAs throughout the state.
Some of the people that Avatar supports have found a good fit in our apartment/independent living programs. We tailor services to what people need (shopping, budgeting, recreation) while also fostering a great deal of independence and self-sufficiency. We also provide residential services to people who live at home with their families.
Avatar currently provides Day Services to close to 60 individuals. Every day, we focus on creating a unique and tailored experience for all participants. While some receive day supports via their homes, many utilize our Warwick location as either a springboard to community experiences or to access quality center based activities. If you’re interested in learning more about Avatar’s day programs, please call Ray Memery at 401-826-7500 x32.
There’s nothing like having a job you love. It can bring financial independence, enhanced community integration, and a wider social circle. We are fully committed to finding job matches that work for RI businesses and our participants.
We are active in our communities! Rhode Island is rich with opportunities to explore nature, volunteer, pursue fitness, enjoy the arts, and be spontaneous. Our day programs are committed to supporting individuals in experiencing all our communities have to offer.
We provide a variety of quality center-based group activities that are customized to the interests of the people we support. Some examples include songwriting, pet therapy, art, money skills, rock band, cooking/nutrition, and photography. Our hub is a great place to hang with friends, shoot a game a pool, or just relax and listen to smooth jazz in the sensory room.
